Turning biodiversity data into real-world impact
Open by Design
Open Nature is a bold, collaborative initiative to transform the way the world understands, shares, and acts on biodiversity data. We believe that by making biodiversity knowledge operational, open, and actionable, we can accelerate the shift to a nature-positive future.

Our vision: we envision a world where biodiversity knowledge is readily available, open, and informs every decision that impacts nature.
Challenges in Biodiversity Data
Across the world, there are many targets to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. We know we need to put nature on a path to recovery, but how do we get there?

Society can’t act on nature without better data
  1. Biodiversity loss is one of the most critical environmental issues we face on Earth. We’re approaching multiple mass extinctions, which not only threatens wildlife but the ecosystem services we rely on, such as fresh food, clean water, and fertile soil. Put simply, biodiversity loss affects us all.
  2. From national biodiversity goals to the global 30 by 30 initiative, the world has collectively agreed it’s essential to protect nature and reverse biodiversity loss.
  3. Despite growing commitments to reverse nature loss, biodiversity data remains fragmented, inaccessible, and insufficient. 75% of the headline indicators chosen to track progress against the Global Biodiversity Framework still lack available data. Valuable insights remain hidden behind private repositories, restrictive licenses, or siloed systems.
  4. This disconnect between ambition and reality delays action. While new technologies promise better monitoring, we lack the infrastructure and governance to translate that potential into results.
  5. Open Nature exists to fill that gap—by building the data systems, partnerships, and processes needed to turn knowledge into action.

TOOLS & DATA
A new approach for faster, open biodiversity innovation
Open Nature is grounded in the principles of radical openness, transparency, and distributed innovation. Our goal is not to centralize control but to spark and sustain a wider shift in how biodiversity data is produced and shared.

We draw inspiration from open-source models in software development—rapid iteration, continuous improvement, and open collaboration. We aim to:

Accelerating science into operational products. We identify scientific data products with high-impact potential and scale them into open-access, operational formats.

Mobilizing data. We develop methods to collect and open up biodiversity data that’s currently unused or restricted, and create open alternatives where needed.

Publishing information rapidly and transparently. Inspired by open-source software, we release iteratively—learning and improving as we go.

Driving innovation through openness. We coordinate across the scientific community to fill critical knowledge gaps and align biodiversity products with real-world decision-making needs.
Whether you’re a scientist, funder, or local community — there’s a way to get involved.
